Usability can assist you in designing, testing, and evaluating your website
or software application in order to ensure accessibility compliance. Section
508 of the Rehabilitation Act requires that, effective June 2001,
any Federal agency or vendor that provides software to a Federal agency
must ensure that those with disabilities have comparable access
to information and data. To further stress the importance of accessibility,
consider the following:
- The number
of people impacted by inaccessible computer and software design is difficult
to calculate precisely, but is estimated to be over 30 million in the
United States alone.
- When done
right, the benefits of adding accessibility to the development lifecycle
will outweigh the costs.
- Automated
tools are not enough to ensure an accessible website or software application.
They often miss important accessibility data that can only be found
by manual testing in a usability lab.
